When we choose a goal and invest ourselves in it to the limits of concentration, whatever we do will be enjoyable, and once we have tasted this joy, we will redouble our efforts to taste it again. This is the way the self grows. By Mahali Csikszentmihalyi, also known as the father of flow. Also known as the father of flow. Today we're going to talk about one of my favorite feelings, which is being in flow state. You'll hear athletes call it being in the zone, and you can even achieve this state by playing chess, listening to music or reading a book. Being in flow state is just a mental state of complete absorption in what you're doing and an energized focus in whatever activity you've chosen, where you also feel this complete loss of self-consciousness and time just melts away. Getting into flow state can just change your entire day. It feels so good and there are so many benefits that come from achieving flow state. Some of the benefits I can think of you get yourself into this heavy, heavy sense of concentration where you're just able to focus on whatever's in front of you without getting distracted, and then it leads to higher output, this higher quality of work. You achieve a sense of clarity. It's just like your body and mind, knowing what needs to be done without having to even think about it. You don't have any obstacles in front of you. They fade away the stress, worry, self-doubt, all of that just kind of melts away when you achieve a flow state and it brings this great feeling. It's kind of like just this intrinsically positive experience. There's no superficiality driving this force, it's just that pure pleasure, that personal pleasure that comes with being in the moment and doing something that you're just passionate about. It brings a joy. It just goes beyond that temporary high. It's kind of like a general sense of well-being sets in and you have this lasting sense of joy and fulfillment for the rest of the day, maybe more so.
LeAnna Azzolini:The big question is now how do we get into a state of flow? Number one you want to balance skill and challenge. You've got to choose a task that's challenging enough to be engaging, but not so difficult that you're going to get anxious. Number two set clear goals. Know exactly what you're trying to achieve. Number three make sure you have created an environment that is going to allow for uninterrupted focus. Number four focus on the process and not the result. And number five be present.
LeAnna Azzolini:Practice mindfulness to help you become more aware and absorbed in the moment. So, whether you're playing chess, rock climbing, gardening, dancing, writing, painting, sculpting, whatever you've chosen to immerse yourself in, make sure those five points have been covered and you will achieve a state of flow. When, in flow, action and awareness become one, and few things feel better than that. Find some time this week to get to a quiet place with no distractions, put the phone away, turn the clock around and dig into something where you can achieve a state of flow. Once you find that thing that can bring you to that state, you'll keep seeking it more often and it will bring a lighter sense to your day, to your week. Even Achieving flow turns work into play. Until next time, stay curious.
